Mastrcode Music has released DB-Force The Amen, a freeware virtual instrument based on the legendary “Amen break”.
“Mastrcode Music proudly presents the world’s first pure “Amen Break” drum machine in form of a Drum Synthesizer VST plugin: the “DB-Force The Amen”!
DB-Force The Amen is available for free download via Mastrcode Music (7.1 MB download size, ZIP archive, 32-bit VSTi plugin format for Windows, made with SynthEdit).
The instrument is basically an “Amen break” beatslicer with some advanced controls and a set of built-in effects. It features a resonant filter, an ADSR envelope for the filter, a global amplitude envelope, a phaser, bitcrusher, distortion, and reverb.
The break is sliced up into individual drum hits which can be triggered independently using MIDI notes. Hitting the velocity values in the 101-127 range plays the slices in reverse. The start and points for the slices can be edited and re-arranged.
I’m not sure if the plugin is limited to the pre-loaded “Amen break” loop, but it would be great if we could load our own loops into it. Seems like a capable little beatslicer which would also work great with other audio loops.
The “Amen break” is probably the most used sample in the world. It is amazing how a 6 second loop from the 1969 tune “Amen Brother” by The Winstons became a foundation of entire music genres like jungle and DnB. You can watch a nice documentary about this great loop on YouTube.
